The Oilseed YEN network is striving to help the whole industry to successfully grow Oilseed rape (OSR) and Linseed from start to finish – providing a better outlook for both crops into the future.
In most regions of the UK, we estimate that OSR crops have a potential yield of around 9 t/ha - this estimation is based on a theoretically 'perfect' variety grown with 'inspired' husbandry. Leading farms and research trials for OSR often achieve in excess of 5 t/ha and over 4 t/ha for winter linseed. However, the average commercial farm produces even less - around 3 t/ha for OSR and 2 t/ha for spring linseed, with little increase in over 10 years. The network is striving to address how to maximise yields in all situations.
Currently, OSR growers across the UK and further afield are faced with an added challenge posed by Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle (CSFB). For this reason, Oilseed YEN includes an Establishment Beauty Contest, specifically for OSR, which complements the yield competition and full suite of benchmarked metrics received by all entrants.
Annual Oilseed YEN membership
Membership is open and available to anyone; farmers, agronomists, and researchers.
- Benchmark your crops' performance against other members
- Attend workshops with experienced farmers, agronomists and scientists
- Be eligible for the YEN Awards at the annual conference, held in November
As part of your membership, you will receive a comprehensive report on your crop’s performance and constraints to yield to help you improve.
UK based individual Oilseed YEN Membership is £300 (incl VAT).
Where entries are supported by a UK based third party, that is not an official YEN Sponsor, Membership is £480 (incl VAT).
For all non-UK entries, Membership is £400.
Corporate Sponsors support the network to maintain its core activities. Their vital role is recognised in all YEN publicity, media items, conference presentations, and on this website.
Sponsors have a key role in steering the evolution of the network and its activities. They have access to network information, intelligence and discussions to support their own yield enhancement initiatives.
Sponsors can also make multiple competition entries, and have multiple attendance at the annual YEN conference. A few sponsors will also contribute some or all of individual farmers membership fees. For more information, please contact the Oilseed YEN Project Manager.
