Oilseed YEN - New for 2017

The essential idea behind the YEN is that, to understand your yields, you should regard your crops as converters of solar into edible energy, and hence must analyse their performance accordingly.

Our aim is to help farmers know their yields, andwork out what is limiting them.

Our approach is to consider the yield potential of the season and compare it to the actual yield acheived.

To do this, we look at the development of a given crop, the basic resources (light energy & water) available to that crop, and then its success in capturing these and using them to form seed.

Oilseed yield potential

The biophysical potential of oilseed rape crops is set by incident light energy, rainfall and soil water storage.

In most regions of the UK, oilseed rape crops are capable of yielding around 9 tonnes of seed per hectare.

Leading farms and research trials for oilseed rape often achieve in excess of 5 tonnes per hectare, however, the average commercial farm produces around 3 tonnes per hectare, with little increase in over 10 years.

This chart (right) shows the ‘technology gap’ for oilseed rape – where new techniques are needed to increase current best yields.

The dark green dots are yields achieved in research trials and best farms. The light green dots are average farm yields across the UK.

Research trials and high performing farms are consistently achieving greater yields than average, however, both still fall short of predicted potential yields.

Oilseed yield reports

Members of the Oilseed YEN not only get access to detailed technical information about crop performance, but can also enter the Oilseed YEN yield competition.

Entrants compete to achieve the highest overall yield, high % of thier crops yield potential, and best grain quality (more detail on the Membership page).

In addition, entrants recieved details reports on their crops performance, including technical information on how their crop compared to others and to AHDB benchmarks.

Members can also attend various Oilseed YEN events, including the annual YEN conference in November, and have access to past newsletters and presentations in the Members area archive.
